Amina

ANY WAY YOU SLICE IT (workshop in ats homecoming 2017) - Melody “Amina” Bustillos

Salt City Tribal (former member of the Davina Tribal Collective)

Amina’s dance history like many others, started at a young age. She studied modern dance throughout her teen years and young adult life.  Because of her love for dance and fitness, she obtained her certification as an ACE group fitness instructor, specializing in step, kickboxing, mat form Pilates and certified Johnny G Spin instructor.

Amina attended her first bellydance class.  Aziz a local pioneer in the Salt Lake City community introduced belly dance to the conservative culture was her first belly dance teacher in 1988.  His dance style was very much influenced by Jamilla Salimpour’s style. She fell in love with the dance, textiles and movement.  A quick study, he referred Amina to one of his colleagues’ Zahirah, a sword master in her own right, for further instruction upon her expressed interest to learn sword dance (Raks al Sayef).

Zahirah of Lebanese decent and a master belly dance teacher mentored and taught Amina to skillfully handle the sword.  Amina also learned quickly many dance genres, i.e., classic Raks Sharki, Armenian, Turkish, Lebanese, Tunisian, Zambra Mora, Ghawazii, Debke, Berber line dance, and Saudi: Khalleegy along with various props to enhance performances.

Amina joined the Desert Orchid Dance Company directed by Zahirah, affiliated with the University of Utah’s Middle Easter Outreach Center and the Utah Artist Ethnic Bank.  Noted sword performances in Suzy Evan’s IAMED production “Rock’n the Casbah” shows and DVD, Various Las Vegas shows, and Rakkassah.

When Desert Orchid Dance Company dissolved, Amina briefly joined the tribal fushion troupe, Kashmir Dance Company performing various combos that included ATS®.  Still wanting more, Amina met Sabine from Eugene, Oregon, which is where she learned and honed her skill in double sword technique.

Another notable Classic Sword teacher is Alexandra King.  Amina attends various sword workshops to learn and integrate other perspectives into her dance. There is always something new to learn from another peer or teacher.
In Amina’s desire to learn, she fell in love with watching FCBD® perform for the very first time in Salt Lake City Utah’s Annual Belly Dance Festival. She became mesmerized, and intrigued by the improvisation aspects and the pure beauty of the dance where all move as one and embodied each other. There was no looking back.  In 2004, she follow that journey and achieved Teacher certification and Sister Studio Status in American Tribal Style® by Carolena Nericcio-Bohman, creator of ATS® and Director of FCBD®.

In 2009, Amina co created the Davina Tribal Collective, it was her inspiration to add sword to the established ATS® Slow Vocabulary as a dialect. The collective worked together along with Carolena to produce and releasing our first instructional DVD  “ATS® with an Edge”.  Noted performances may be seen on YouTube: Tribal Massive Spectacular, etc.

After 6 year, with time, comes change. The Davina Tribal Collective disbanded. Amina has moved on to create Salt City Tribal based out of Salt Lake City, Utah.  She continues her sword and double sword efforts tailoring moves to fit the ATS® Slow Vocabulary.

Amina is an inspirational, articulated and highly educated instructor.  She has enchanted audiences and mentored students; performing and teaching at festivals, seminars and productions throughout her dance profession.  She has traveled and studied with legendary masters of the dance, honing and expanding skills and abilities that enhance her dance style. She is soulful and heartfelt in her performances.

Perfomer in ATS Homecoming 2016.

Bom dia, pessoal!

Super xeros
Maria Badulaques.
